Apparently the locals hated the idea of having a ground there. Rightly or wrongly, football had a terrible reputation at the time. Nowadays, offer them a stadium or blocks of flats and it would be a lot closer thing. Good point. We tend to forget just how much things have changed in 30 years. In my experience, non-league never really had a hoolie problem, but to non-football people, football was football. And certainly in those days, once we were in the FL, there would have been problems (as there were!). Football these days is seen more as an asset to the community, and part of the community - although some of the old doubts and concerns still linger. But in those days, the last thing anyone wanted was a football stadium anywhere near them!

Near where I used to live in Surrey there was a ground used by Esher Rugby Club - with a totally confusing sign outside that said "Esher Football Club"!! But then I guess that's Surrey for you... Maidstone Rugby Club is officially called Maidstone Football Club. Take a look on their website and see the badge- MFC

They can't even get the name of the football club they claim to have supported since they were young correct!

I know its only a typo - or even a dreaded 'auto-correct' - but the thought of our noise-making supporters occasional 'signing' their chants as opposed to 'singing' them might explain the times when they are quiet?

She wasn't very good at predicting the result.

Anyone else noticed the Town End is rusting under foot?
I know it's only a temporary stand, but hope the Elvis End is made of better galvanised steel.

As this thread is about stadium plans, when will we see plans for the new stand on riverside? Yes, funny how it was a hot topic when we were in the play-offs, but no one mentions it now... In the longer term the stand the directors envisage building there makes sense and will of course be essential for increasing the number of seats, however in our current predicament we don't actually need it. Keep the money in the bank for now seems like a better idea to me. I strongly suspect the directors have decided to just shelve the project for a while.

Assuming we go down (am I allowed to say that?), no segregation next season means home fans occupying all of the Elvis End? It'll be nice to see it at its full potential.

Although we won't have so many segregated games, I think the club will carry on in much the same way, with the 'barrier' still there and away fans housed in that end of the EE. Too much hassle to change established procedures and working methods - and we're unlikely to need the whole EE, after all. Still, I'm looking forward to being able to use the back exit (fnar, fnar), and having a loo within Old Man's Bladder distance.

If the Mangels get promoted for example, I think segregation will be a certainty!

Game-by-game basis, yes. Didn't we segregate the lovely Wealdstone and a couple of others last time around?

I still think they'll continue with the away turnstiles, away end, etc, if not active segregation. It's just easier to do. And why change practises when you've got to change them all back again a season or two later?
Although, if Dover go down as well, or visit in a cup, I hope they'll build a special temporary steel gullag, just for them. About time they found out what it's like to be an away fan at Crabble.

There used to be a football ground somewhere in the south-east called The Athletic Ground. Never known any athletic meetings being held there but they did hold the odd greyhound race meeting. Now if I could only remember where. JDL? Was that anywhere near the Rugby League ground?
