Good luck to him. Any coincidence that Wolves is Bob Laslett's (Margate's Sugar Daddy for the less informed) old club. I think it must be.

A few years ago a non-league club like the Stones would make a few quid if a deal like this went through. Not any more it seems which is a shame, especially considering how many of our academy lads are capable of making it at pro level. Seems the rules re contracts etc have changed and the pro clubs rarely see a need to compensate smaller clubs.

Why should we? Did we compensate Whitstable when we signed him in the summer?

No but we should have done. This is how small clubs used to make some revenue. Find a diamond in the rough and allow the big boys to polish him up.

It's one of those situations where it'd be a nice gesture for a big club to compensate the smaller team but from the perspective of the player a mandatory fee may well stop clubs taking a chance and giving a youngster a chance to prove themselves. A fee, even if it's not a massive one, may make them think a bit more picky about who they take on board.

If they find a good player then a few grand is not going to stop them signing him. Especially if they were to sell him on for a small fortune later on. Ahem (Smalling) Ahem.

He's impressed their U21's coach so far. Article in their local paper published on the web on Saturday morning: Express & Star

"His club have been very kind to let him come and train with us."
Could we have stopped him if he's not on contract?
Interesting comments on the article as well - one from an ex-Stones fan and one from a bloke who thinks we're getting a fee for Simpson!

Having changed jobs a few times when young, I would have been a bit peed off if an employer had demanded a transfer fee. The world simply does not work that way, and football has had to accept freedom of employees to ply their trade where they choose. This applies particularly to younger players at the start of their careers. We can piss and moan about it, or accept the real world as it is. Best of luck to Simpson, a real credit to us.
